The COVID-19 pandemic has hit most of the communities around the globe. Earlier researches have reported the psychological effects of pandemics either on the general populations or on specific communities such as students and health professionals. A scanty number of papers have focused on the interaction among complex factors underlying the pathogenesis of the disease. In this review, we aimed to integrate the accessible data about the possible mechanistic processes predisposing to COVID-19 infection in the health professions. We summarized these factors as “stress, microbiota, and immunity triad.” We utilized the PubMed database, Google, and Google Scholar search engines to search the literature related to combinations of these keywords: “pandemics, COVID-19, coronavirus, SARS-CoV2;” “gut microbiota, gut-lung axis, dysbiosis, nutrition;” “work stress, workload, health workers, health professions, and medical team;” and “immunity, cytokine storm, and viral load.” We detected no discussions combining the suggested triad concerning the medical team personnel. We cast light, for the first time to our knowledge, on the potential pathogenic role of “stress, microbiota, and immunity triad” in COVID-19-infected health workers.

Introduction: Teratomas are those tumors which are derived from the totipotent cells. They may manifest at any site. Ovary is the most common site for teratomas. Ovarian teratomas may be immature and mature depending on the elements they harbor. Mature ovarian teratomas may contain ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm. Ectoderm mainly comprises the skin and its adnexa, followed by neural tissue, whereas mesodermal elements are blood vessels, adipose tissue, cartilage, and hematopoietic tissue, similarly, endoderm consists of respiratory tissue, thyroid gland, and gastrointestinal tissue. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in the histopathology section from January 2008 to April 2019 and included 54 cases of mature ovarian teratomas. The slides of ovarian tumors were evaluated, and the relationship between clinical and pathological findings was studied with emphasis predominantly on neural elements. Results: The most common age group among the women with ovarian teratoma was 21–30 (31.48%) years, the youngest patients been 8 years, and oldest of 60 years. The chief complaints were pain in 37 (68.51%), followed by mass per abdomen 25 (46.29%). On gross examination, most of the tumors were unilateral 53 (98.14%), having tufts of hairs with sebaceous material 34 (61.81%). Microscopic examination confirmed the presence of squamous epithelium and its adnexal structure 52 (94.54%). Neural elements were seen in 14 (25.45%) cases. In every case with neural elements, skin, its adnexa, and adipose tissue were also seen. Conclusion: Teratomas have diversity in the age of presentation, gross findings, and microscopy features. Neural elements are commonly found in 25.45% of ovarian teratoma which is mostly found in association with skin and adipose tissue. The combination of neural elements with adipose tissue signifies an association between them because both arise from different dermal elements.

Background: The meniscal cartilages are fibrous discs that are important for knee structures and have the ability to bear weight and stabilize joints. However, morphological and standard data for the meniscus are limited. Therefore, this work will compare anatomical and histological parameters of meniscal cartilages. The results will be important for the different measurements that are necessary for knee joint surgery. Materials and Methods: A total of 24 aged cadavers (12 males and 12 females) were included. Knee joints were dissected and the menisci were excised and labeled as medial or lateral, right or left, male or female. Then, the menisci were kept in 10% formalin solution. Morphological variations of the meniscal shapes were macroscopically categorized. Different measurements, including the distance between anterior and posterior horns, outer and inner circumferences, width (breadth), and thickness, were done using a digital Vernier caliper and recorded manually. Results: 48 medial menisci (MMi) cartilages were studied, they were 54.6% crescent-shaped, 34.6% V-shaped, and 10.8% U-shaped. 48 lateral menisci (LMi) cartilages were studied, 41.6% were crescent-shaped, 56.4% were C-shaped, and 2% were disc-shaped articular cartilage. Findings included differences in their lengths and thickness. Conclusion: The findings of this study were significant in providing new information on various morphological and morphometric parameters of the MMi and LMi in aged males and females, which are necessary to require more precise and comprehensive fundamental data that will be helpful for many specialists for better diagnostic and therapeutic approaches; aiming to restore normal joint conditions in senile people complaining of different meniscal pathologies.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of prebreakfast tooth brushing (PrBTB) and postbreakfast tooth brushing (PoBTB) with or without a prebrushing rinse in caries prevention through the estimation of Streptococcus mutans count. Materials and Methods: Sixty consenting dental students were divided into three age-matched groups of 20 each and instructed to follow prebreakfast, postbreakfast tooth brushing, and prebreakfast rinsing plus PoBTB using the Bass technique. Plaque samples were collected at the start and at the end of every quarter for a total of 6 quarters (18 months) for the evaluation of S. mutans colony-forming unit (CFU) counts. The decayed missing filled surface (DMFS) index of participants was also recorded and compared at the beginning and end of the study period. Results: The post-breakfast tooth brushing group with pre-breakfast rinse (RPoBTB) and without pre-breakfast rinse (PoBTB) showed a highly significant reduction in total S. mutans CFU counts per ml (38% and 29% respectively) at the end of the study. The changes in DMFS value were not significant and did not show any correlation with the S. mutans counts. Conclusion: Our study revealed that PoBTB with or without a prebreakfast rinse reduces the total counts of the cariogenic bacteria S. mutans more efficiently than PrBTB. Although further proof in the form of clinical trials is essential, this study provides the proof of concept for a minor change in the tooth brushing habit, which can significantly enhance caries prevention.

Introduction: The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology (TBSRTC) was introduced for unifying the terminology and morphologic criteria along with the corresponding risk of malignancy, leading to more consistent management approaches. The aim of this study was to study the utility and reproducibility of TBSRTC in reporting thyroid cytology in a referral cancer center. Methods: The fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of all thyroid nodules were included for a period of 5 years, from January 2016 to December 2021, in this cancer center. They were retrospectively reviewed and recategorized according to TBSRTC by two experienced pathologists. Cytohistopathological correlation was done for the cases which underwent surgical resection. Results: 522 fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of thyroid swellings were evaluated and categorized according to TBSRTC. There was agreement in the cytological diagnosis of 512 cases, of which 260 (50.78%) were benign lesions, 189 (36.91%) were malignant, 5 (0.97%) were unsatisfactory/nondiagnostic, 41 (8.01%) were follicular neoplasm/suspicious for neoplasm, 13 (2.53%) were suspicious for malignancy, and 4 (0.78%) cases were reported as atypia of undetermined significance. Two cytopathologists were in agreement in 512 cases (98%) of cases. Almost complete concordance was noted in the malignant (99%) and benign categories (98%). Disagreement was seen in 10 cases. Histological follow-up was available in 201 cases with an overall malignancy rate of 62.68% (126/201). Conclusion: TBSRTC proved to be a very simple and effective reporting system for thyroid FNAC, especially in the setting of a cancer center. This enables proper triaging of cases with thyroid masses into those who require surgical intervention and those who can avoid it, thereby preventing unnecessary morbidity.

Background and Aim: Cisplatin (Cis) is a highly effective chemotherapeutic agent. However, it produces severe testicular toxicity. It was reported that some antioxidants could overcome this toxicity. Selenium nanoparticles and royal jelly (RJ) were among these reported antioxidants. Therefore, this study was designed to compare these two antioxidants in protecting the testes against Cis-induced toxicity. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on sixty healthy adult male albino rats (weight: 200–220 g) randomized into six groups, ten animals each. Group I (control), Group II (animals received intragastric Nano Selenium), Group III (animals received intragastric RJ), Group IV (animals received an IP injection of Cis 7 mg/kg), Group V (animals received intragastric Nano Selenium, and Cis injection), and Group VI (animals received intragastric RJ and Cis injection). After 10 days, the animals were sacrificed by cervical decapitation. The testes were weighted, and specimens from the left testis were processed for histological and immunohistochemical techniques, whereas specimens from the right testes were prepared for transmission electron microscopic examination. Results: Cis-treated animals had significantly reduced weight of their testes. Light microscopic examination revealed severe histopathological changes in the germinal epithelium and Leydig cells, confirmed with electron microscopic examination. There was a significant increase in the color area percentage of Caspase-3 immunostaining of the germinal epithelium and Leydig cells, compared to that of the control group. Group II and III were similar to control group. Both Groups V and VI revealed significant preservation compared to the Cis group. Conclusion: Selenium nanoparticles and RJ partially improved testis from Cis-induced toxicity, However, there was no significant difference between both groups.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common and lethal disease. Septin 2 belongs to the same class of GTPases as the RAS oncogenes influence the invasion and metastasis of many types of tumor cells. Furthermore, HER2/neu is involved in the tumor genesis and progression of various types of tumors. The role of both molecules is still questionable in CRC. Aim: The aim of the study is to examine the expression of septin 2 and Her2/neu in patients with CRC. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on 2 groups; the first group consisted of 70 paraffin blocks for CRC patients and the second group was formed of 24 blocks from patients diagnosed as colorectal adenoma. For each adenoma and carcinoma case, a section was immunohistochemically stained using antihuman SEPT2 polyclonal antibody. For each carcinoma case, another section was immunostained using monoclonal anti-HER2/neu. The results were statistically analyzed and compared with the collected clinicopathologic data of the cases. Results: For the carcinoma patients, there was a significant association between SEPT2 staining intensity and histologic type (P = 0.001) and grade (P < 0.001), tumor T (P = 0.001) and N (P = 0.011) stages and the presence of lymphovascular invasion (P < 0.001) and a significant association between Her2/neu immunoreactivity scores (IRSs) and histologic grade (P = 0.048), tumor T (P < 0.001) and N (P = 0.019) stages and the presence of perineural (P = 0.004) and lymphovascular (P = 0.003) invasion. In colonic adenoma patients, there was a significant relation between septin 2 IRSs and the grade of dysplasia in the adenoma (P < 0.001) and significant relation with its expression in carcinoma group (P < 0.001). Conclusion: A potential prognostic role of septin 2 and Her2/neu for patients with CRC is suggested as expression of both markers was associated with many important prognostic clinicopathologic variables in patients of CRC.

Lipoma is the most common mesenchymal tumor seen in the trunk and extremities. It is rarely found in the mouth. Clinically, it resembles other lesions and is not considered in the initial diagnosis. Histopathological evaluation is needed for accurate diagnosis. Surgical excision is the main treatment modality. Histologically, many variants are described of which fibrolipoma is thought to have some recurrence. This article describes a case of fibrolipoma of the buccal mucosa in a geriatric patient.

Anastomosing hemangiomas (AHs) are benign vascular tumor with rare occurrence in the ovary and the majority being asymptomatic. We report one such case of AH with stromal luteinization. A 35-year-old female had complaints of abdominal pain and heavy menstrual bleeding for 2 years. Her lactate dehydrogenase was markedly raised. Following the clinical suspicion of germ cell tumor, exploratory laparotomy and right salpingo-oophorectomy were done. On frozen section due to extensive stromal luteinization, diagnosis of sex cord-stromal tumor was suggested. However, the case was finally diagnosed with AH with extensive stromal luteinization. This case highlighted the potential mimics of AH due to coexistent raised biomarkers and secondary changes, thereby posing a diagnostic dilemma on intraoperative consultation.

The incidence of nosocomial infections has been reported as 12%–18% in various studies from India, with bloodstream infections amounting 15%. Fungal pathogens have become a major cause of nosocomial bloodstream infections. Detection of fungemia by blood culture often requires 2 or 3 days of incubation. Few studies have reported the detection of Candida species (Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, and Candida parapsilosis) by review of routinely stained blood smears, often days earlier than diagnosis being possible by culture. These can be seen as round–oval extracellular as well as intracellular budding yeast organisms which show pink-magenta staining with periodic acid Schiff stain. We report here the detection of Candida spp. in the peripheral blood smear.

Amyloidosis is a complex multisystem disorder characterized by deposition of an aberrant protein in tissues and results in disruption of the normal organ function. Localized amyloidosis is a rare disorder. It commonly affects the head-and-neck region, and only 4% of these lesions are encountered in the orbital region. Hence, conjunctival amyloidosis is a very rare entity. It is thought to be a manifestation of local immunologic disorders. Amyloidosis of conjunctiva is more often localized with no other systemic features. Here, we present two cases of unilateral conjunctival amyloidosis, one with extensive calcification. Conjunctival amyloidosis must be considered in the differential diagnosis of conjunctival neoplasms. Histopathological examination and apple-green birefringence on polarized microscopy with Congo red stain remain the gold standard for diagnosing this entity.
